When going for a web-hosting package a question often arises, which package will suit you most? First criteria will be the one, which completes your requirements followed by price. But even after these two requirements are completed, you may still get confused to choose between a Dedicated server and less famous Colocated server. Very few of you know the difference between the two dedicated servers. You can found many companies around the world offering you the services of both Dedicated server hosting and Colocated server hosting. Both of the servers have its own advantages and disadvantages. Final decision depends on the needs for the website.

Biggest difference between Colocated server and Dedicated server hosting is the possession of the server. If you go with Dedicated server you will be provided with the exclusive use of the server, but that server will be owned by some another entity, mostly the hosting provider. On the other, hand a Colocated server is owned by the user and is placed in a space rented by the hosting provider. You can say in a Colocated server you rent the space to mount it in the server and in a Dedicated server, you rent it directly. Although both of them are the option of cheap, hosting when compared to purchasing and housing your own server, but they differ from each other in many fields.

A big advantage of having collocation server is that, it will give the user a full access to the server at any point of time. All the applications can be run from a remote location while the server is placed somewhere in a secure facility known as Data Center. Data Centers are well equipped with internet connectivity, uninterpretable power supply and security. This will give the user a valuable space in business or home that would be needed to place the server. With a Colocated server individual can divide the cost of utilities between all the individuals with servers housed in the area. One of the biggest drawbacks of the Colocated servers is that all the issues, maintenance cost and all the time-to-time needed repairs to the server are handled by the users. Also, Colocated server will cost you more then Dedicated servers as the whole hardware will be from your side. These two drawbacks suggest to go for Dedicated server instead of Colocated server. One should only go for the Colocated server only if he/she has a large network. For the small network or average network Dedicated server is the best.

Coming to the Dedicated Servers Hosting, a user with a dedicated server can have exclusive access to it and can install any software, upload or place any content or application on the server as per their needs. Websites hosted on dedicated severs also have higher reliability and can handle more traffic the websites hosted on shared servers. All the issues arising with the dedicated server will be handled by the hosting company. Many believe that the problem with the dedicated servers is you only own the data on the server, not the whole server. If any kind of problems is occurs with the quality of service provided, a very little option is there for the users until their contracts expires.
